48 hours in Athens

Traveling to Greece but don’t have much time? No worries. While the ancient Greek city of Athens should be on your list of places to visit, you don’t need days to do so.

In fact, you can see the capital’s highlights in just a day or two.

WHERE TO STAY

Elia Ermou Hotel

Ermou is one of the popular streets in Athens that has shopping and restaurants galore just a couple blocks from the city-centre. The Elia Ermou hotel is modern, affordable and puts you smack-dab in the epicenter of it all.

The hotels best feature is that it has a rooftop restaurant that offers a spectacular view of the Acropolis, especially at night when it’s lit up. Order a drink and enjoy the view.

WHAT TO SEE

The Acropolis

The ancient citadel high above the city of Athens. It’s the land where several ancient buildings are housed including the Parthenon, Temple of Zeus and Old Temple of Athena.

The Acropolis Museum

The museum is down the hill from the Acropolis and houses thousands of historical pieces from the ancient city. Be sure to visit the site underneath the museum. It’s a well-preserved ancient neighborhood.

Plaka

You can kill two birds with one stone .. or feed two birds with one scone (whichever you prefer) when visiting the Acropolis because you have to walk through Plaka to get there. This is the uphill village of temples and family-run taverns.

Museum of Archaeology

Weapons, vases, gold-plated jewelry fit for royalty, Greek statues and tombs … the museum has it all. It’s 10 euro to get in and will take a couple hours out of your day to visit.

Changing of the Guard – Across the street from the city-centre is the Presidential Mansion. Every hour on the hour passerby’s can watch the changing of the guard.
