Italy

Your must-see guide to Rome

The eternal city has a lot to offer — sights, sounds and carbs for days. But luckily you don’t need a lot of time to experience the whole city. Grab one of the city’s paper maps at any hotel or restaurants to get your trip started. It will become your guide and trusty companion.

Things to do

Day 1

Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, Via dei Fori Imperiali between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia

Travel tip: Start at the Forum. The line is much shorter than the Colosseum and you can get to the Colosseum from this entrance.

Altare della Patria aka Rome War Memorial, Piazza Venezia

Day 2:

St. Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museum, Piazza San Pietro, 00120

Travel tip: This is worth a tour guide. The history and the stories behind the design, the art and those who have lived in the Vatican is essential to understanding the Vatican City. The Sistine Chapel while magnificent is more so when you understand what you’re looking at. I suggest a smaller tour with less than 10 people. Plus, with a tour guide you may be granted early access to the Vatican before it opens to the public, helping you avoid terribly long wait times and crowded rooms.

Galleria Borghese, Piazzale Scipione Borghese, 5, 00197

Day 3:

Spanish Steps, Piazza di Spagna, 00187

Pantheon, Piazza della Rotonda, 00186

Trevi Fountain,  Piazza di Trevi, 00187
